Help Glencoe Outsmart Waste
Did you know you know that the Glencoe Schools are collecting CAPRI SUN drink pouches to recycle in a new way? Across our schools, we have joined in the Terracycle efforts to help upcycle these drink pouches into new items such as pencil cases and backpacks. Children may share their empty drink pouches in the collection containers within each school. Our schools earn 2¢ per pouch and we minimize the garbage produced! Thank you for your support as we participate in this collection through the remainder of the school year. Learn more by visiting the Terracycle website at http://www.terracycle.net.

Island Paradise!
Thinking critically and creatively, fifth grade students use a combination of clay, imagination, and facts to make an island model.

In social studies students learn about landforms and use this information to address the following unit questions throughout the year.

  • How can physical features be both barriers and avenues to settlement? (Geography)
  • How did geography influence the history of the people of Colonial America? (History)
  • How did wants and needs lead to trade and movement? (Economics)
  • How can individuals or groups solve a problem in their community? (Political Science)
  • What were some of the cultural differences in the colonies? (Social Science)

Students apply intellectual standards of clarity, accuracy, depth, breadth, and logic to their answers and discussions. Did you know that a clay island could represent so much to our fifth graders?

Internet Safety
Earlier this year, the Illinois General Assembly passed into law the Internet Safety Education Act. This law requires school districts to provide education about Internet threats and risks. As a result, Central School will formalize a school-wide initiative that educates parents, teachers and students about the importance of Internet safety. Every month, we will update our website to include tips and resources for parents to utilize. We will also post the videos and questions that our students will watch/discuss during advisory. These discussions will take place on the first Tuesday of each month.
