The Art Club provides additional opportunities for students with an interest or desire in art. These are open classes where students pick a project or medium to explore (clay, drawing, painting) Students have created murals around the school building.
Creative Writing club is an additional opportunity for students who love to write. During the meetings, the faculty sponsor uses discussion to prompt ideas for creative writing, assists students with the writing and editing processes, and allows an inviting and open forum for students to share their writing. The Glencoe PTO has generously funded this club.
The Glencoe Greenies are the student extension of the teacher's Green Team. They assist in school wide conservation and ecological projects such as plastic bottle recycling, lunchroom composting, Waste Free Wednesdays, "We Add Up" T-shirt sales, etc. This special group has also made several video announcements and begun their own Suggestion Box format to further the greening of Central School. This after school club meets in the Library Learning Center. Students from 5th-8th grade are welcome to stop for assistance with homework completion and organization of their materials. Central School staff members work with individual students or small groups of students as a support for activities and lessons presented in class. The Glencoe PTO has generously funded this club.
Each year the Literary Magazine staff published a collection of student work. Poems, descriptive pieces, and short stories are included. Student photography, drawing, and other art work are included to compliment the writing. The student staff members meet with two faculty advisors to read, select and edit pieces to be published. Each week groups of students at Central School gather before school to participate in Math Explorers. In these informal groups students have an opportunity to improve their math skills. The sponsors provide students with activities in the areas of mathematics. These activities are hands-on with students utilizing a problem-based approach. All students with an interest in mathematics are welcomed. Activities are varied so all participants feel success. The Glencoe PTO has generously funded this club.
In addition to the curricular music program, a variety of musical experiences are available for students at Central School. 7th, 8th morning Chorus and 6th morning Chorus are offered for students interested in participating in chorus, but are unable to fit it into their activity period due to band and orchestra schedule. Seven ensemble groups meet each week: Beginning Jazz, Beginning Percussion, Percussion, Brass, Beginning Brass, Special String, 8th Grade Choral Ensemble. The Solo & Ensemble Concert is held in the Spring and is open to all 6,7, & 8th graders.
Science Olympiads is a contest held each year. Fifteen 6 - 8th grade students compete in twenty-two events involving a variety of science skills, problem solving skills, academic knowledge, and technology design.
Fifth and sixth grade students have an opportunity to participate in an intramural athletic program. Fall, winter and spring activities are open to all students regardless of a student's particular skills level. At grades 7 and 8, interscholastic sports are available.
The Student Council is the student governing body of Central School. Representatives from each Home Base meet with the elected officers and the faculty advisor. They assist in planning school activities, making recommendations and discussing ways to improve Central School. They runs candy sales to fund-raise, both for Central School and for a charity they select. Representatives and alternates are elected by Home Bases. Members of the Council elect officers. There is one Student Council for fIfth-seventh grade. In addition, the eight grade class elects its own officers who constitute the Executive Cabinet. The Executive Cabinet organizes service projects and fundraisers to offer the eighth graders opportunities to make a positive impact on the school and the community. Executive Cabinet also organizes fun activities, such as contests or dances, to help make the eighth grade year memorable.
This is an instructional yet informal club where students learn to use GarageBand software. Students of varying skill levels from beginners to those advanced in mixing or composition participate in this morning club. Students in 5th-8th grades have the opportunity to record live instruments and vocals, work on iMovie projects or slide shows, or create music videos. Students may also choose to use Lego robotics. Students may be using Lego robotics for the first time or have advanced skills in construction and programming. This morning club offers opportunities for students in 5th-8th grades to work on project from a class or receive additional support on special applications. The Glencoe PTO has generously funded this club.
Students at Central School have an opportunity to explore and apply technology through participation in the Tech Club. The Tech Lab teacher meets with students on a regular basis to explore Tech Lab modules, participate in group activities to utilize equipment and modules such as Video Production and Digital Editing, and participate in group activities utilizing other modules as a basis for investigation. The Glencoe PTO has generously funded this club.
The Central School yearbook preserves memories of friends, fun and learning throughout the school year. Students meet weekly to: create artwork for the yearbook cover, activities and home base classrooms; take photographs for candid pages; and to create and compile survey information. |
